Abstract

Focusing on the seemingly opposed examples of Citizen Kane and Heart of Darkness, this paper intends to examine the paradoxical relations of meaning and reserve as instanced by narrative – be it cinematographical or fictional.

The quest for meaning suggests that meaning can and should be culled from a reserve – e.g. the storehouse of History, memory or facts – but on close scrutiny it also reveals that there is no end to such quest, that somehow meaning is never "delivered" fully, unreservedly – there is no meaning without reserve. Yet such reserve, the very unattainability of the reserved, the secret, is the condition of meaning as quest – without reserve, there is no meaning.
